Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
OM Psychology – Fremantle Psychology Services FAQ’s
When people look for a psychologist, they often have questions about what therapy involves, how appointments work, and what to expect. At OM Psychology, we aim to make accessing mental health support clear, comfortable, and simple. Below are the most frequently asked questions we receive from new clients, parents, coaches, and referrers.
- What areas are OM Psychology trained in?
OM Psychology provides evidence-based psychological support for individuals of all ages, with particular training & experience in:
- Eating disorders & disordered eating
- Athletes and high-performance sport
- Adolescents and young adults
- Anxiety, stress, low mood
- Performance psychology
- General mental health and wellbeing
We deliver therapy tailored to each client’s needs, drawing from CBT, ACT, mindfulness-based therapies, and trauma-informed approaches.
- Do I need a referral to see a psychologist?
No, you can book directly without a referral.
However, many clients choose to see their GP first to access a Mental Health Treatment Plan (MHTP), which provides Medicare rebates for eligible sessions. A referral is also required for Eating Disorder Treatment Plans (EDTPs).
If you’re unsure which pathway is right for you, we can guide you through the options.
- What can I expect in my first session?
Your first session focuses on:
- Understanding your concerns
- Exploring your goals
- Discussing relevant background information
- Creating a treatment plan
- Answering any questions you may have
It’s a supportive, conversational appointment designed to help your psychologist get to know you and ensure you feel comfortable moving forward.
- Do you work with athletes and sporting organisations?
Yes. OM Psychology has experience in:
- Athlete wellbeing
- Performance pressure and anxiety
- Return-to-sport mental readiness
- Team culture and coach education
- Eating disorders and disordered eating in sport
We also work closely with coaches, support staff, and sporting programs to provide psychoeducation, workshops, and consultation.
- How long are psychology sessions?
Most sessions run for 50 minutes, though session length may vary depending on the service or assessment required.
- Do you offer telehealth appointments?
Yes. We provide secure telehealth appointments for clients across Australia, including rural and remote regions. Telehealth is suitable for most concerns and is fully eligible for Medicare rebates when referred under an appropriate plan.
- How many sessions will I need?
This depends on your goals and the nature of your concerns. Some clients attend a few sessions for skills and strategies, while others benefit from longer-term support. Your psychologist will discuss an estimated treatment timeline after your initial appointments.
- Do you see children and teenagers?
OM Psychology provides support for adolescents and young athletes 15 years and older navigating:
- School stress
- Anxiety
- Eating difficulties
- Friendship or team challenges
- Identity development
- Sport-related pressure
We work collaboratively with parents, coaches, and schools where appropriate and with consent.
- What are your fees?
Fees vary depending on the service and provider. Medicare rebates may apply under a Mental Health Treatment Plan or Eating Disorder Treatment Plan. We also accept private paying clients and some third-party funding sources.
